Calvert Hall Is Streaking, Players Set Career Milestones

by Mike Loveday

Streaking

Calvert Hall (Md.) opened its 2021 season in search of its fourth-straight Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) A Conference title with a 10-9 win over Gilman (Md.). Shuey Kelly led the team with five points (3 goals, 2 assists), followed by Ethan Long with four points (3,1). JoJo Dean (1,2) and Mic Kelly (3a) each totaled three points in the win. The win extended the Cardinals’ overall winning streak to 19 games.

Head Coach Bryan Kelly has led his team to 20-straight wins over conference opponents – a streak that dates back to 2018. The last time Calvert Hall lost to an MIAA opponent was April 20, 2018, against Boys’ Latin (Md.).

The Cardinals were the first team since the MIAA formed in 1996 to win three-straight titles and are going for No. 4.

LaxRecords has not kept records for wins against conference opponents, but the Cardinals streak is believed to be among the longest in the conference’s modern history.

Since the MIAA formed in 1996, only Loyola-Blakefield (Md.) won back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008. The Dons won 15-straight games against conference opponents during that span. The streak started with a 10-6 win over Calvert Hall on April 3, 2007. They won their final 12 games of the 2007 season; 10 of those were in-conference. They won their first five conference games of 2008 before falling to Gilman 17-7 on April 22, 2008.

Boys’ Latin won 23 straight conference games from March 28, 2006, to May 14, 2007. That streak included a 21-0 season in 2006 and a streak in which the Lakers reached the MIAA A title game three straight seasons. The Lakers’ 23-game streak was ended by the Loyola-Blakefield team that went on to win 15 straight.

Records before the current iteration of the MIAA forming in 1996 are not complete. St. Paul’s (Md.) has the longest overall streak of any of the conference teams, having won 72 consecutive games from 1943 to 1946, 61 of those against MSA opponents.

LaxRecords was notified that McDonogh (Md.) possibly had a streak of 20-plus games in the late 1990s. Research on that streak is still pending.
